Car coats were created as protective garments in the early days of motoring when driving a car was still a sport rather than a common means of travel. Early cars had open or soft tops which exposed drivers to the elements. The car coat really gained popularity as a menswear staple in the 60s and 70s when the length was shortened to fall at the mid thigh.
